GUIDING BELIEFS
Each of us will experience a multitude of losses in our lifetime. Impermanence
means everything changes, teaching us that life is full of grief. In short, loss is
inevitable and grieving is normal.
Grieving encompasses the feelings and thoughts surrounding a loss. Grieving is
about our inner world experience. Mourning is the outward expression of those
feelings and thoughts through meaningful activities, traditional ceremonies,
and rituals.
Creative expression or art-making is an act of mourning. Creative energy
becomes a vehicle that carries grief, transports pain, and shuttles pieces of a
broken heart to safety.
Grieving Gallery offers a forum to explore the differences between grieving and
mourning in community with others. All adults are welcome regardless if your
loss is recent or past.

GRIEVING GALLERY: HEALING CREATIVELY
|
Grieving Gallery is a loss support group
utilizing creative expression to tell our
grief stories. Group members present artistic
expressions as tributes to their losses.
Losses include any significant endings, like
the death of a loved one or the break-up of a
relationship, but also encompass transitions
like the loss of a home, a job, or even
one’s identity.
Creative expressions are completed outside of
group meetings. Art-making is not part of the
agenda; however, creative guidance is offered,
when needed. All non-artists and skill sets are
welcome, as are insecurities about expressing
yourself creatively. Grieving Gallery promotes
process over product.
"I don’t have much
knowledge yet in grief --
so this massive darkness
makes me small.
You be the master: make
yourself fierce, break in:
and my great grief cry will
happen to you."
Rainer Maria Rilke

Your grief for what you’ve lost lifts a mirror
up to where you’re bravely working.
Expecting the worst, you look, and instead,
here’s the joyful face you’ve been wanting to see.
Your hand opens and closes and opens and closes.
If it were always a fist or always stretched open,
you would be paralyzed.
Your deepest presence is in every small
contracting and expanding.
The two as beautifully balanced
and coordinated as bird wings.
CREATIVE EXAMPLES
These photographs are of
empty spaces – a room
without windows, an
abandoned theater, a dead-
end street. My grief is about
feeling empty.
My grief kept growing inside
me – wild and painful. I
started gardening to cope.
This potted rose represents
my grief, prickly at times, in
need of pruning – potentially
beautiful.
I felt like the fabric of the
relationship was torn and
not repairable. So I ripped
up some of his old clothes
and made a grief quilt.
