Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a scientifically
researched method of psychotherapy proven effective for the treatment of
trauma, abuse, and complicated grief.
EMDR is intended to alleviate physiological symptoms like overwhelm, hyper-
alertness, anxiety, anger, irritability, disassociation, and depression. To date,
EMDR has helped an estimated two million people of all ages relieve many
types of psychological stress.
EMDR and BRAIN SCIENCE
EMDR is grounded in psychological science and brain research. No one knows
exactly how any specific psychotherapy works inside the brain or
neurobiologically. However, scientists do know that when a person is very
upset, the brain cannot process information as it does ordinarily.
Disturbing memories can become “frozen in time,” so when a trauma is
remembered, the memories feel as intense or as horrible as the original
experience. Such memories have a lasting negative effect, interfering with how a
survivor sees the world and relates to others.
EMDR seems to have a positive, direct effect on how the brain processes
information. It appears to be similar to what occurs naturally during dream or
REM sleep (rapid eye movement).
During and after a successful EMDR session, normal information processing in
the brain is resumed and the individual no longer relives the images, sounds, or
feelings of the original disturbing event or memory. The memory still exists;
however it is no longer as distressing or physiologically triggering. The individual
is now able to place the memory and incident in the past.
